  • Louis Devedeux was born in Clermont-Ferrand in Auvergne in 1820. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Paris under Paul Delaroche (1820-1874) and Alexandre Descamps (1803-1860). He exhibited at the Salon from 1838 to 1868 his work was much admired. He returned to Clermont-Ferrand to open a studio he taught painting. Notably in 1867 Emperor Napoleon III bought The Slave Traders which now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Rennes
